It is with sadness that we share the passing of former Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation Board member, William “Bill” Prescott Lecky, FAIA. Bill, age 92, of Annapolis, MD, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Bill lived a remarkable life as a Washington, D.C.–based architect, but he will be most profoundly remembered for one of his defining roles in helping with the creation of the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall.
This project became one of Bill’s proudest achievements. Through thoughtful design and deep respect for those who served, he helped create a powerful and lasting tribute to Korean War Veterans—one that continues to move millions of visitors each year. His work ensured that the sacrifices of those who served would be remembered, solidifying his legacy as an architect of remembrance.
Born on January 21, 1934, in New York, NY, Bill’s passion for design began early and evolved into a distinguished career after earning his architecture degree from the University of Virginia in 1960. Over nearly four decades, Cooper-Lecky Architects became a cornerstone of the D.C. architectural community, with Bill mentoring generations of young architects along the way.
His legacy lives on not only in the buildings he designed, but in the enduring tribute he helped create to honor those who served. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
