The Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation’s (KWVMF) Board of Directors proudly welcomes Ambassador Mark Lippert to its Board.
한국전쟁 참전용사 기념재단(KWVMF) 이사회는 마크 리퍼트 대사의 이사회 선임을 환영하는 바이다.
“Having Ambassador Lippert join our Board is a significant milestone for the Foundation,” said KWVMF Chairman, General John H. Tilelli, Jr., U.S. Army (Ret.). “Mark’s vast experiences as a former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, former Assistant Secretary of Defense, current executive with Samsung, Navy Veteran, and his love for Korea will elevate the Foundation’s ability to better honor Korean War Veterans and their Families. Since the dedication of the Memorial’s Wall of Remembrance in July 2022, we have a renewed sense of purpose focused on honoring Korean War Veterans and their Families, educating people about their sacrifices and contributions, and inspiring future generations to always remember that ‘Freedom Is Not Free’ … and Ambassador Lippert will help us in every endeavor.”
한국전쟁 참전용사 기념재단 이사회 회장인 미군 퇴역장성 존 H.티렐리 장군은, “리퍼트 대사가 저희 이사회에 참여하게 된 것은 재단의 중요한 이정표입니다. 전 주한 미국 대사, 전 미 국방부 차관보, 현 삼성 이사, 해군 장교 등을 거친 리퍼트 대사의 폭넓은 경험과 그의 남다른 한국 사랑이 한국전쟁 참전용사와 그 가족들을 뜻 깊게 기리려는 우리 재단의 능력을 고양시킬 것으로 생각됩니다. 2022년 7월 한국전쟁 참전용사 기념비 경내에 기억의 벽이 헌정된 이후, 자유는 대가 없이 얻어지는 것이 아니라는 것을 미래 세대가 언제나 기억할 수 있도록 재단은, 한국전 참전용사와 그 가족들을 기념하는 일뿐만 아니라 자유를 위한 개개인의 희생과 기여에 대한 교육과 미래세대에게 영감을 줄 수 있는 여러 활동에도 새롭게 초점을 맞춰서 사업을 추진하고 있습니다. 그리고 리퍼트 대사는 재단의 이 모든 노력에 큰 도움을 줄 것으로 보고 있습니다.” 고 밝혔다.
Ambassador Lippert said, “I am truly honored to join the Foundation’s Board of Directors, as this organization has such a sacred and respected duty to support Korean War Veterans and their Family Members. As many know, I am very passionate about many aspects of Korea — the people, culture, and history. With a storied past, the U.S.-ROK Alliance plays a vital role of ensuring global security and promoting a rules-based international order. In addition, I have always possessed special admiration as to how those on both sides of the Alliance recognize and honor Korean War Veterans. Joining the Board, to me, represents an opportunity to support the work of the Memorial and Foundation and continue to promote this very special piece of the Alliance.”
리퍼트 대사는, “한국전쟁 참전용사와 그 가족들을 기리는, 특별한 임무를 수행하고 있는 이 재단의 이사회에 참여하게 되어 정말 영광입니다. 많은 분들이 아시다시피, 저는 한국 사람들과 그들의 문화, 그리고 역사 등, 한국과 관련된 것들에 깊은 애정을 가지고 있습니다. 유서 깊은 한미 동맹은 세계 안보와 원칙에 바탕을 둔 국제 질서 증진에 중요한 역할을 하고 있습니다. 저는 언제나 이 한미 동맹의 양측이 어떻게 한국전쟁 참전용사를 인식하고 기리는가에 대해 특별한 존경을 가지고 있었습니다. 저에게 있어 이사회 참여는, 이 역사 깊은 한미 동맹의 중요한 부분인 참전용사를 기념하는 일의 연속성을 증진시키려는 저의 작은 실천이기도 하고 기념비와 재단의 여러 사업을 지원하는 기회이기도 합니다.”고 화답했다.
Ambassador Mark Lippert has a distinguished career in the United States Government that spanned two decades and included series of senior-level positions across multiple agencies. From 2014-2017, he served as the U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Korea. He served as chief of staff to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel (2013-2014) and as assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs (2012-2013), the top official in the Pentagon for all Asia issues. Amb. Lippert also worked in the White House as chief of staff to the National Security Council in 2009. An intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy, he mobilized to active duty from 2009 to 2011 for service with Naval Special Warfare (SEALs) Development Group that included deployments to Afghanistan and other regions. From 2007 to 2008, he deployed as an intelligence officer with Seal Team One to Anbar Province, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received his B.A. in political science and an M.A. in international policy studies, both from Stanford University. He speaks Korean. Amb. Lippert is married to Robyn E. Lippert who serves as a senior vice president at UnitedHealth Group and has two children, Sejun and Sahee. They live in Washington, D.C. with their basset hound, Grigsby.

The Korean War Veterans Memorial is a national memorial in Washington, DC, that honors Korean War Veterans who fought against North Korea’s invasion of South Korea in 1950. As a living center, the Memorial honors Korean War Veterans by educating about their sacrifices and contributions in defending South Korea and inspiring current and future generations to continue defending freedom. The Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to honor Korean War Veterans and their Families by ensuring the maintenance of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in partnership with the National Park Service. The Memorial commemorates the sacrifices of the 1.8 million Americans who fought in the Korean War (1950-1953).
한국전쟁 참전용사 기념비는 1950년 북한의 남한 침공에 맞서 싸운 미군 한국전쟁 참전용사를 기리는 워싱턴 디씨 소재의 국가 기념비이다. 그들의 정신을 기리는 살아있는 전당인 이 기념비는 한국을 방어한 그들의 희생과 기여에 대한 교육과, 현재와 미래 세대의 자유 수호 정신을 고양함으로써 한국전쟁 참전용사를 기념한다. 한국전쟁 참전용사 기념재단은 미 국립공원관리청과 함께 한국전쟁 참전용사 기념비의 유지, 보수를 지원함으로써 한국전쟁 참전용사와 그들의 가족들을 기리는 임무를 수행하는 비영리 단체이다. 해당 기념비는 한국전쟁 (1950~1953)에 참전한 180만명의 미국인의 희생을 기린다.
